MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1935)

This is part of my ongoing attempts to watch every Best Picture winner in order. Despite the story being rather simple (The captain on this ship fucking SUCKS!), the film was still compelling. I found myself interested to see how Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable) handled his rage against the injustices carried out by Captain Bligh (Charles Laughton) in contrast to his commitment to his team and being a good leader. I’ll be honest, when the mutiny did finally occur, I was a little disappointed. I think I was hoping it’d be a lot, lot more violent. Captain Bligh was afforded too much grace for the amount of suffering he had been personally responsible for. Granted, the movie would have ended a lot sooner had they just ripped that guy apart, but come on. He was the worst! More than half of the movie was just scenes that made you ask what this guy’s damage was. He was so terrible that I was genuinely surprised anyone still had his back. I was sure that the mutiny would be unanimous.

The movie was a little tough to parse at the start due to the fact that all the guys on the boat had the same fuckass ponytail. There was also this minor confusion about whether everyone on the boat was supposed to be British, because Clark Gable was absolutely not doing a British accent, and neither were a few other actors.

Overall, it’s a fun movie that I think would do well if remade for a modern audience. Though, I don’t think the modern Captain Bligh should just be sent out on a boat. He should get fuckin’ got

Food Recommendation: Sorry, not sorry, but there is a bar in Koreatown called HMS Bounty and the inside is decorated to look like you’re on a ship. I mean, come on. When else am I supposed to recommend this place?

This is all I could think of during the movie:

OH, HI! (2025)

This was probably one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in 2025 so far. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading and go see it right now....

EDDINGTON (2025)

More like edit this a ton, because this movie needed to be 1 hour 45 max. Too much happening but with little to no payoff. Set in May...
