OH, HI! (2025)

This was probably one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in 2025 so far. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading and go see it right now. The less you know the better.

The characters felt real and the dialogue and behaviors felt grounded (up to a point). Isaac (Logan Lerman) invites Iris (Molly Gordon) on a romantic weekend getaway but finds himself in hot water after he admits he’s not looking for something serious. I’d describe this more of a “romance dark comedy” than a “romantic comedy”. The lines were funny, the characters were charming and then kind of adorably stupid. My one gripe was that Isaac was too dumb too many times to then finally pull off the performance of his life to try and escape. Why would you ever reject a girl when you’re locked to a bed? And then do it AGAIN? Maybe he got brain worms from swimming in the pond. Iris pointing out to him that she wasn’t crazy for believing they were a couple made me sympathize with her. The writing reflected how out of hand the modern dating environment feels and did it deftly. Iris’ descent into denial and psychosis was well written and well acted. It felt like a believable tidal wave of crazy. It’s the dating version of Misery I never realized I needed.

I was really happy to see John Reynolds pop in as the accidental abetting boyfriend Kenny. I loved his work in the Four Weddings and a Funeral TV show. Kenny and Max’s (Geraldine Viswanathan) introduction into the story as the enabling friends who try to help Iris was very well-timed. The group had good chemistry together and breathed new life into what was becoming a very claustrophobic movie (not that there’s anything wrong with a claustrophobic movie).

One thing I will say about the ending. I loved the Casablanca callback but she should have been immediately arrested as soon as the ambulance doors closed. The conclusion felt too neat.

Food Recommendation: Easy summer salad: Mixed greens, strawberries, mint, and raspberry vinaigrette. For when you end up with way, way more strawberries than you ever meant to buy.

EDDINGTON (2025)

More like edit this a ton, because this movie needed to be 1 hour 45 max. Too much happening but with little to no payoff. Set in May...
